About The Birdcage

Armand (Robin Williams), a gay Miami drag club owner, and his partner/star performer Albert (Nathan Lane) can’t wait to meet Val’s son’s future in-laws. The only problem? The in-laws are a conservative senator and his traditional wife (Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest). For Armand and Albert, there is only one (nonsensical) choice: pretend to be a straight couple for their first visit and hope it all works out. Adapted from the classic French farce La Cage aux Folles, and with a screenplay written by Elaine May, The Birdcage was a smash on its original release and has enchanted audiences ever since. [118 min; comedy; English]

“Performed with matchless aplomb and made with plush professionalism, pic serves up pure pleasure from beginning to end.” — Todd McCarthy, Variety

"One of the loopiest, most hysterical family-values movies ever made." — Hal Hinson, Washington Post

"What makes Mike Nichols' version more than just a retread is good casting in the key roles, and a wicked screenplay by Elaine May." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
