Angry that he had the audacity to kill off the hero of one of her favorite books, a lonely woman hobbles and holds her favorite novelist hostage, giving him no choice but to write a new book, exactly the way she wants it—and she's not going to let him go until it's complete. For his original novella, King based the character of the unstable fan, Annie, on Mark David Chapman, who at some point before murdering John Lennon met King and asked for an autograph, introducing himself as King's "number one fan."
