After years of consolidating his empire, the elderly Great Lord Hidetora Ichimonji decides to abdicate and divide his domain amongst his three sons. The eldest, Taro, will rule, and his second and third sons—Jiro and Saburo—will take command of his second and third castles, but are expected to obey their eldest brother. When Sabura is banished for disobedience, the (literal) Shakespearean dramatics play out in Kurosawa’s third adaptation of the Bard.
