This visceral re-creation of a key year in the tumultuous Algerian struggle for independence from their French colonizers in the 1950s remains a hallmark of revolutionary cinema. Recruited to join the National Liberation Front, Ali La Pointe quickly becomes involved in the revolution, where he and his compatriots battle the French state in the form of Colonel Mathieu. This classic of Italian neorealist cinema is shot in a documentary-inspired newsreel format with primarily non-professional actors who lived through the real events portrayed and soundtracked by a score from Pontecorvo and Ennio Morricone.
