A 100th anniversary celebration of the F.W. Murnau classic with a live score from organic-electro duo ten thousand lakes.
The Ufa-produced, silent fantasy film starring Emil Jannings that is a hallmark of Murnau's oeuvre and follows the demon Mephisto as he wagers with God that he can corrupt a mortal man's soul. [107 min; drama, fantasy, horror; German intertitles with English translation]
The film will be accompanied by a live score from Minneapolis' ten thousand lakes (xkl). ten thousand lakes are Peter Bruhn (percussive and electronic instruments and noises) and Steven Larsen (stringed and electronic instruments and noises). Their influences are numerous, and not limited to music alone. Visual art, film, dance, poetry, and literature all inform their approach to creativity, as does formative years performing in a European-based shoe-gaze band and an indie-rock band in the Midwest. xkl regularly composes and performs scores to accompany features accompanying avantgarde and experimental films from the first half of the 20th century.
