A 25th anniversary screening of David Lynch's ode to Hollywood and the psyche of Los Angeles, presented in 35mm. Conversation with noted Lynch scholar Justus Nieland to follow.
A complex tale of suspense set in sunshine-drenched Los Angeles, the film follows a dark-haired amnesiac car crash victim and a blonde stranger who become new friends and investigatory partners as they attempt to solve the mystery of the dark-haired woman's true identity. In true Lynchian fashion, this journey is an uneasy blend of innocence and corruption, love and loneliness, beauty and depravity. [147 min; drama; English]
The Cinema is pleased to welcome noted David Lynch scholar Dr. Justus Nieland, who will introduce the film and take part in a post-film conversation with Dr. Ed Dallis-Comentale, Assistant Vice President for Arts and Humanities and Professor of English.
Nieland is Professor of English and Film Studies and Chairperson of the Department of English at Michigan State University. He is a scholar of modernism and a film and media historian and his book on Mulholland Drive will be published by the BFI Film Classics Series this year. He is the author of David Lynch (University of Illinois Press, 2012) and co-author of Film Noir: Hard-Boiled Modernity and the Cultures of Globalization, among many other publications.
