Soundtracks of a Generation

As the 1990s solidify themselves as a decade ripe for recollection and reckoning by an aging Generation X cohort, the Soundtracks of a Generation film series is a nostalgic exploration of four massively successfully film soundtracks that defined Xers—and their preferred cultural cliques—for the first half of the decade’s cultural zeitgeist. One could simply not walk into a used CD store in the ’90s and not find a copy (or several!) of these soundtracks on the shelf. If you didn’t own them, certainly someone you knew did (or had recently sold their copy to make rent money).

From the hip-hop hits of House Party (1990) to the grunge guitars of Singles (1992) to the height of 1970s nostalgia in Reality Bites (1994) to the techno and electronica beats of Hackers (1995), music was key to identity, and Gen Xers often held more than one—depending on who you were hanging out with that weekend! So, sit back, relax, and let the nostalgia take you back to the golden age of hip hop, the inception of electronica, the birth of grunge, and the time 1970s nostalgia was as high as that prior decade once was.
