Vertigo, considered by many to be Hitchcock’s masterpiece and the defining work of his career, tells the story of John “Scottie” Ferguson (James Stewart), a retired (and acrophobic) San Francisco police detective hired by a friend to investigate his wife, Madeleine (Kim Novak), who believes she is possessed by a deceased ancestor. Throughout this taut, psychological thriller, Bernard Herrmann’s score underlines Scottie’s growing obsession with Madeleine, building circular and spiral melodies that echo his increasingly desperate frame of mind. Hitchcock and Stewart received the San Sebastian International Film Festival awards for Best Director and Best Actor, and the film was fully restored in 1996. (New 2K DCP digital presentation.)
