The 90-minute documentary
Hoagy is a homage to one of
Indiana’s most famous sons, Howard Hoagland Carmichael. In a
career that began in the 1920’s and lasted almost half a century,
Hoagy was a household name amongst the ranks of Frank
Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald. While the latter remain
in popular memory, Hoagy’s name has faded. His
songs however –
Stardust, Georgia, Up a Lazy River,
Hong Kong Blues – are still played. Filmmaker Peter
Davis and producer Pat Keller began the first biography
of Hoagy Carmichael in the late 1990’s. The film
was not completed due to copyright on music and
recorded performances.
This work-in-progress
screening may perhaps
revive the
project and set
a course for
its completion.
