A lecture titled In Search of Bonds: The Films and Career of Vadim Abdrashitov will be given by Vladimir Padunov, Associate Professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh where he also directs the Film Studies Program. His articles on Russian film have appeared in a host of journals, including KinoKultura, Russian Review, Iskusstvo kino, KinoForum, and New Left Review.

Vadim Yusupovich Abdrashitov is a Soviet and Russian film director who has been awarded Russia’s highest artistic honor – the title of People’s Artist. He has made more than a dozen films which include Play for a Passenger and Armavir. He is the recipient of numerous awards which include the USSR State Prize, the Nika Award and honors from the Berlin and Venice Film Festivals. Abdrashitov’s films feature an edgy internal cinematic language and shed light on poignant moral issues. The director is a member of the Russian Academy of Film, the Film Director’s Guild of Russia, and is the president of the Studio Ark-Film. He has also served as chairman of the jury at the International Moscow Film Festival. Abdrashitov is a professor at the Russian State Film Institute.
