Sherlock Holmes has been a recognizable cinematic staple since 1900. The 1988 comedy Without a Clue subverts the iconic relationship of the detective and his faithful friend. Here Dr. Watson (Ben Kingsley) is the detective and Holmes (Michael Caine) is a drunken actor hired to fulfill the demands of public expectation. Without a Clue, a smart, entertaining commentary on popular culture, was the last Sherlock Holmes feature film produced until 2009. Print courtesy of the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
