Starting in the 1920s and spanning through the Cultural Revolution, the film tracks two Peking Opera stars and their unwavering friendship which is tested by sexual orientation, love interests, war, a communist takeover, and the Cultural Revolution. Time Out wrote  about the film: “Appropriately operatic, Chen’s visually spectacular epic is sumptuous in every respect. Intelligent, enthralling, rhapsodic.” The film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Film critic Roger Ebert called the film “almost unbelievably ambitious” for capturing 50 years of Chinese history with such “freedom and energy.” In Mandarin with English subtitles.
