Writer/Director Eliza Hittman’s three feature films have earned her comparisons to Claire Denis, Lynne Ramsay, and Catherine Breillat. However, anyone who has heard Hittman speak about her work understands she is the director of her own, very clear, powerful, and poetic vision. She knows exactly what she wants her sound and images to convey—the language of cinema is clear, as it speaks to her. Her first two films, It Felt Like Love and Beach Rats won prestigious honors from Berlin, Sundance, Film Independent, Gotham and many other film festivals and institutions. Her newest film, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award: Neo-Realism. It followed with the Silver Bear Award at the 2020 Berlin Film Festival (Berlinale) and is one of the best reviewed films of the year. It Felt Like Love, Beach Rats, and Never Rarely Sometimes Always are all currently available for online viewing through various online platforms. This conversation will focus on her new film and her career as an independent American filmmaker.

The event is co-sponsored by Indiana Memorial Union Board.
