About Virus Tropical

Based on the graphic novel of the same name, Virus Tropical combines a detailed, unique, and lively animation style with  a tender coming-of-age story of artist Paola Gaviria in the early days of finding her own voice. Gaviria is an artist, cartoonist, and illustrator. Born in Ecuador and raised in Colombia, she studied artistic expression at  the University Javeriana in Cali and visual arts at Bellas Artes in Medellin, Colombia, and has written several graphic  memoirs including Virus Tropical, Todo Va A Estar Bien, Nos Vamos, and QP (eramos nosotros). [97 min; animation,  drama; Spanish with English subtitles]

Programmed by IU Cinema Social Media Manager Liliana Guzmán. An artist talk with Liliana will take place before the screening at 6:15pm in the Cinema's lower lobby, where she will discuss the connections between Virus Tropical and her art series Next to Myself.

"The constant wash of visual beauty is entirely apt for a life and times in alarming motion, but always regulated by love." —  Phil Hoad, The Guardian

"A film about the adventure that is the life we all live while we're waiting for our grand adventure to begin." — J Hurtado,  ScreenAnarchy

"Its vivid black-and-white animation is so distinct that it turns the artist's life into a bold, dizzying ride." — Pat Padua, Washington City Paper
