About Inherent Vice

When private eye Doc Sportello’s ex-old lady suddenly shows up with a story about her current billionaire land-developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin...well, easy for her to say. It’s the tail-end of the psychedelic '60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble. [148 min; crime, comedy, noir; English]

"Inherent Vice unfolds so organically, so gracefully and with such humanistic grace notes that even at its most preposterous, viewers will find themselves nodding along, sharing the buzz the filmmaker has so skillfully created." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

"Inherent Vice is an aggressively weird movie, which you should take not as a warning but as a compliment and an invitation to see it, to let its stoner vibes wash all over you." — Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic

"Watching Paul Thomas Anderson's wonderfully textured and intricate LA-set Inherent Vice, you are easily reminded of the famous story about Howard Hawks' version of The Big Sleep." — Geoffrey Macbab, Independent (UK)
