About Vanya

Andrew Scott (Fleabag, All of Us Strangers) brings multiple characters to life in Simon Stephens’ (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) radical new version of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. Hopes, dreams, and regrets are thrust into sharp focus in this one-man adaptation which explores the complexities of human emotions. Ivan (Uncle Vanya) has spent his life managing the estate and business affairs of his family with little regard for his efforts. Scott plays the titular character, retired professor Alexander and his daughter Sonia, Alexander's second wife Helena, Vanya’s widowed mother Maureen, his romantic rival the country doctor Michael, and more. Filmed live during the play's sold-out run in London’s West End. [100 min; drama; English with open captions]

"...the work and effort put into this show by Andrew Scott is something spectacular to behold. There’s nothing quite like seeing someone who is not only great at acting, but loves what they are doing, and doing it well. Scott is in his element, with this being another successful role(s) among a long list of fantastic characters he’s brought to life." — Brian Kitson, Comic Circus Broadway

"Scott gives carefully controlled, thrillingly virtuoso physical performances. He exits as one character and enters as another, excelling in the plate-juggling feat of playing two or more characters in conversation." — Arifa Akbar, The Guardian

"Vanya—a solo reworking of Chekhov’s play—is a truly remarkable performance from Andrew Scott: not a man hammily flexing between roles but something more profound and complicated, a headlong odyssey into the devastating emotions at the play’s heart." — Andrzej Lukowski, Time Out
