About All That Breathes

In one of the world’s most populated cities, two brothers—Nadeem and Saud—devote their lives to the quixotic effort of protecting the black kite, a majestic bird of prey essential to the ecosystem of New Delhi that has been falling from the sky at alarming rates. Amid environmental toxicity and social unrest, the "kite brothers" spend day and night caring for the creatures in their makeshift avian basement hospital. Director Shaunak Sen (Cities of Sleep) explores the connection between the kites and the brothers who help them return to the skies, offering a mesmerizing chronicle of inter-species coexistence. Winner of the Sundance World Cinema Documentary Grand Jury Prize and Academy Awards nominee for Best Documentary Feature. [97 min; documentary; English and Hindi with English subtitles]

A Q&A with Katie Lo (Executive Director, WildCare Inc.) and Sarah Maddox (Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator), moderated by Brittany D. Friesner (IU Cinema Managing Director, WildCare Education Team Member), will follow the screening. Prior to the screening, starting around 3pm, non-releasable animal ambassadors from WildCare will also be present inside the auditorium and in our lower lobby. Please note that anyone misbehaving around these animals may run the risk of injury and could be asked to leave, so please be kind to them and to yourselves and behave accordingly.

WildCare Inc. is a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation facility providing professional care and rehabilitation services to sick, injured, and orphaned native Indiana wildlife species so that they may be returned to the wild. Established in 2001, WildCare has been caring for Indiana’s native wildlife for 20+ years while protecting the next generation of Hoosier wildlife through education and community outreach. An almost entirely volunteer-run organization, WildCare accepts between 1,200–1,600 animals into its rehabilitation program annually. Currently, it holds state and federal permits allowing care for all native wildlife with exception of deer and venomous snakes.

"Simple in its slow, calm storytelling, but profound in the philosophical points it raised about how we are all connected in the vast ecosystem." — Carol Midgley, The Times UK

"All That Breathes blends a verité-style character study with gorgeous nature cinematography while never losing the film’s overall commentary on how man interacts with nature—or merely chooses to destroy it through inaction." — Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com

"In an age when we're constantly reminded of all that's bad, All That Breathes celebrates good things it's easy to forget: the wonder of life, the virtues of compassion and the human capacity to make the world better." — John Powers, NPR
