The Legacy of Ousmane Sembène & Paulin S. Vieyra

The Legacy of Ousmane Sembène & Paulin S. Vieyra celebrates the crucial role these two pioneers played in the formation of early African cinemas. After each film, there will be discussions with film critics, some of the filmmakers’ collaborators, witnesses from the period, and African film specialists covering topics such as film, African cultures, the French-speaking world, and postcolonial history.
Additional events will take place at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater and include:
- 1950s, Before African Cinemas (May 1, 7pm), a program of shorts followed by a Q&A with Claire Fouchereaux (IU) and Brett Bowles (IU)
- Independence & Birth of African Cinemas (May 8, 7pm), a program of shorts followed by a Q&A with Daniela Ricci (University of Paris Nanterre)
- First African Fictions (May 15, 7pm), a program of shorts followed by a Q&A with Akin Adesokan (IU)
- Mandabi + L’envers du Décor (May 22, 7pm), a double feature followed by a Q&A with film critic Fatou Kine Sene
This series is part of the Collections of Sembène and Vieyra Archival Workshop organized by the Early African Cinemas Lab and sponsored by the Public Arts and Humanities Project, IU Department of French and Italian, and the African Studies Program.
