Combining post-apocalyptic science fiction with the hardcore adult feature, Café Flesh depicts a dystopian world where nuclear radiation has turned the majority of the population into "sex negatives" who become viscerally ill at the touch of another's skin, leaving them desiring vicariously by watching the few remaining "sex positives" perform in erotic cabaret shows. Self-reflexively commenting on the dynamics of porn spectatorship and eerily prophetic of the emerging AIDS crisis, Café Flesh is considered one of the few genuinely intelligent adult films to achieve crossover success as a 1980s midnight movie. Introduction provided by David Church, Indiana University. (35mm print is provided courtesy of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction.)
