This Charles Dickens novel was adapted for film nine times in the 20th century, but Frank Lloyd's 1917 version is the truest to Dickens's masterpiece.  At the start of the French Revolution, Charles Darnay and Sidney Carton are both in love with Lucia Manette.  Charles, husband to Lucia and does not know of Sidney’s lover for her, goes to Paris to rescue Sydney who has been an imprisoned. He is himself caught and condemned by the revolutionary forces there. When Sydney becomes determined to prove his worthiness of Lucia's love, he goes to all extremes to see that Charles is freed. The film is lavish in production design and the battle scenes of the Revolution are powerful.
