This animated semi-documentary visualizes the evolution of human communication from the Stone Age to
today and beyond—from storytelling, to the contemporary humanexus of billions of biological brains and
many more technological artifacts, to multiple possible futures—showing enormous changes in the quantity
and quality of our collective knowledge. The film is the product of collaboration between artist Ying-Fang
Shen, former IU Fine Art student and now professor at Virginia Commonwealth University; IU professor
Katy Börner, an expert in the theory and practice of data mining and information visualization; and Norbert
Herber, a musician and sound artist from IU’s Media School. (Digital. 12 min. Not Rated.)
The film will be followed by a panel discussion
between the collaborators: Shen, Börner, and Herber.
