The director of the award-winning The World, Zhangke Jia, has long produced films that both artfully and strikingly depict the everyday conditions of people under the pressures of China’s recent and rapid modernization. Set in the actual location of the “World (Shijie)” theme park outside of Beijing, the film follows the personal lives and working conditions of the employees, most from the hinterlands within China, that maintain the entertainment center. In Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles. (35mm Presentation)
