Something Wicked represents the culmination of a decades-long dream for Ray Bradbury. He conceived it in the 1950s as a film for Gene Kelly. Unable to get it made, he instead re-developed it into a successful novel. In the 1970s, he attempted to re-adapt the novel for screen on several occasions, and finally in the early 1980s Disney backed this version from director Jack Clayton. Clayton and Bradbury had been friends for decades, but had disagreements over Bradbury’s script, and their friendship sadly foundered. Nevertheless, there are scenes in this film, heightened by James Horner’s compelling soundtrack, that recall the finest traditions of the mid-century terror film. (35mm presentation)
