Filmed over a period of nearly three years, this documentary traces the contemporary photographer Vik Muniz from his studio in Brooklyn to his Brazilian homeland. His subject is the world’s largest garbage dump (Jardim Gramacho on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro) and its pickers (catadores) of recyclable materials. Beyond looking at the artistic process and poverty, it presents an uplifting story of the transformative power of art. The film premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award, and went on to be nominated for the Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature. Nan Brewer, the Eskenazi Museum of Art’s Lucienne M. Glaubinger Curator of Works on Paper, will discuss photographs from Vik Muniz’s Pictures of Garbage series, the subject of the documentary, which are included in the museum’s major mid-career retrospective of the artist.
