What happens when you cut all ties with your culture and history? Fourteen-year-old Elle Marja is a reindeer-herding Sámi girl exposed to racism and race-biology examinations at her Swedish boarding school. Elle starts dreaming of another life, but to achieve it, she has to become someone else and break all ties with her family and heritage. Sameblod is a glimpse of Sámi society from within, and opens the door on a dark part of Swedish colonial history. Director Amanda Kernell intends the film as a declaration of love to those who left as well as to those who stayed—“a film of yoik and blood.” In South Sámi and Swedish with English subtitles.
