After 17 years of making films with Hollywood, director Alfonso Cuarón returns to Mexico to make his most personal and best film of his career. The film is a poignant study of domestic tragedy and class, fictionalizing his family life growing up in the 1970s in Mexico City. At the heart of the film is a family housekeeper (and unofficial nanny) named Cleo, who is expertly played by Yalitza Aparicio, a non-professional actor. The result is an exquisite, heartbreaking, and poetic look at a year in the turbulent, middle-class life of a young boy oblivious to social structures, looking for the warmth and comfort of family. The film won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 2018 Venice Film Festival and opens in select theatres and on Netflix on December 14. In Spanish and English with English subtitles. Contains mature content.
