This meditation on cinema’s past tells the bizarre history of a long-lost collection of 533 nitrate film prints from the early 1900s. Dawson City was the center of the Canadian Gold Rush and the final stop for a distribution chain that sent films and newsreels to the Yukon. The collection was found in 1978, and Bill Morrison draws on these permafrost-protected, rare silent films and newsreels, pairing them with archival footage, photographs, interviews, and an enigmatic score by composer Alex Somers.
Buried and Breaking Away demonstrates the effect of Bloomington, Indiana’s elements on one of its favorite cinematic progenies.
