Fully titled The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade and adapted by Peter Brook from his renowned stage production, this period drama depicts French writer and aristocrat Marquis de Sade directing a performance while institutionalized in an asylum. Relating the death of revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat at the hand of Charlotte Corday, the play, also starring de Sade, increasingly challenges the authority of the institution and the regime they represent.
