About Magnolia

This sprawling character and operatic psychological study follows 10 people whose damaged lives intersect—often by sheer coincidence—during a single day in Southern California's San Fernando Valley. Paul Thomas Anderson's follow-up to Boogie Nights boasts a deep bench of phenomenal acting talent, including Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, John C. Riley, William H. Macy, and Jason Robards (in what would be his final film). Cruise received a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his role as the utterly contemptible dating guru Frank T.J. Mackey and won the Golden Globe in the same category, while Magnolia took home the Golden Bear at the 2000 Berlinale Film Festival. [183 min; drama; English, German, and French with English subtitles]

"Magnolia is operatic in its ambition, a great, joyous leap into melodrama and coincidence, with ragged emotions, crimes and punishments, deathbed scenes, romantic dreams, generational turmoil and celestial intervention, all scored to insistent music." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"The kind of brilliantly weirdo picture that, by all rights, shouldn't have gotten made at all but this time, miraculously, was." — Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune

"Anderson has dared to make a movie that refuses to conceal its excesses, an amazing abundance of strong emotion, technical verve and pure performance power." — Robert Denerstein, Denver Rocky Mountain News
