About Mountains

Haitian immigrant Xavier (Atibon Nazaire) is a demolition worker living in Miami’s Little Haiti with his wife Esperance (Sheila Anozier) and college dropout son, Junior (Chris Renois). While seeking a more spacious house for his family, Xavier’s labor is dismantling his neighborhood brick by brick. Monica Sorelle’s award-winning feature debut is a multigenerational drama that deftly explores the relationships between immigrants and their children, the intersecting threats of gentrification and climate change, and the pursuit of the American dream. [95 min; drama;  English and Haitian Kreyòl with English subtitles]

A Q&A with actors Sheila Anozier and Atibon Nazaire, moderated by Websder Corneille (Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies), will follow the screening.

"It's the kind [of film] that dares us to look back and consider what it means to create a home away from the shores where you were born, in a country hostile not just to your betterment but to your very survival." — Angelica Jade Bastién, Vulture

"The strength of Sorelle’s storytelling hinges on how she divulges these points not in verbose dialogue or forced confrontations, but through the ambivalent emotions that coat all human drama." — Carlos Aguilar, RogerEbert.com

"Mountains is the kind of movie that reminds us why we love to sit in the dark and peek at other people’s lives." — Erick Massoto, Collider
