Johnny Angel, a ship captain (George Raft) finds that his father’s ship has been hijacked and the crew murdered. He scours the streets of New Orleans to find his father’s murderer, along with Paulette, whose own father was part of the ship’s crew. They soon uncover a secret involving the ship’s cargo and the motivation for the hijacking. This 1945 film noir is chock full of claustrophobic, obsessed men, struggling to claw their way out of the darkly-lit streets. Even Hoagy Carmichael sounds unnatural under the weight of the sordid French Quarter. 35mm print is provided courtesy of UCLA Film and Television Archive. (35mm presentation)

Vocalist Tony Ponella will sing selections from Hoagy Carmichael’s songbook before the screening.
