Winning audience and best director awards at the Sundance Film Festival, Hedwig and the Angry Inch follows the life story of an East Berlin transsexual punk-rock woman who sets out to tour America with her band, following the former lover/band-mate who stole her songs. Stage productions have played for many years in Japan, and Korea hosted a TV reality show about the search for a new Hedwig. IU alumna Harriet Newman Leve was one of the producers that brought Hedwig to Broadway in 2014, featuring Neil Patrick Harris as the title character; the production received four 2014 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical, Best Supporting Actress in a Musical and Best Lighting Design of a Musical.
