Series: Orson Welles: A Centennial Celebration and Symposium
Orson Welles wrote, directed, and starred as Captain Hank Quinlan, a corpulent bad cop on the U.S. side of a Mexican border town that is thrown into disarray when a bomb goes off in a car traversing the border. It is Welles’s most steamy and surreal film, populated with biker gangs, crooked characters, and low-lit set pieces, the sort of noir pulp that you can chew on forever. With a seemingly endless supply of gonzo performances from Marlene Dietrich, Charlton Heston, and Janet Leigh among many others, Touch of Evil resonates as Welles’s most luridly entertaining film.
