Orson Welles’ follow-up to
Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons follows debonair Eugene Morgan (Joseph Cotton) as he falls for Indianapolis society girl Isabel Amberson (Dolores Costello), but makes a serious mistake and loses her to another man. Isabel has a son, George, and when her husband dies and Eugene asks for her hand in marriage again, his decisions lead to tragedy for all. Controversially, studio executives at RKO deleted 40 minutes of Welles’ original cut, and reshot the ending, which Welles fought against. (35mm presentation)
