A Syrian refugee seeks asylum in Finland. A traveling Finnish salesman leaves his wife and opens a restaurant. The two storylines overlap in this wry comedy, as these individuals try to find glimpses of hope and their own ways in the outskirts of the welfare system. Toivon tuolla puolen offers an artistic and humoristic take on the European refuge situation. Director Aki Kaurismäki won the award for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2017 with this movie. In Finnish, Arabic, and English with English subtitles.
