In 1968, the Japanese government announced plans to build an international airport in the fields of Sanrizuka near Tokyo, and thus dispossess thousands of farmers of their land. Students from cities, activists, and the filmmakers rushed to ally with the peasants. Their common fight against the eviction became one of the most enduring social ruptures in the history of postwar Japan.
