Special effects scholar Dr. Julie Turnock pulls back the curtain on contemporary visual film effects, discussing the link between realism, George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic, and filmmaking in the Western and Eastern film industries. Dr. Turnock is Associate Professor of Media & Cinema Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). She's widely acknowledged as an expert in the history and aesthetics of cinematic specific effects. In addition to numerous article and book chapters, she is the author of Plastic Reality: Special Effects, Technology, and the Emergence of 1970s Blockbuster Aesthetics (Columbia UP, 2015) and The Empire of Effects: Industrial Light and Magic and the Rendering of Realism (University of Texas Press, 2022). Turnock is also the director of the Roger Ebert Center for Film Studies at UIUC.
Dr. Turnock's talk will be followed by a 7pm screening of the 2016 film The Mermaid.
