Hayao Miyazaki’s underscreened but vital films hinges on one single truism: better a pig than a fascist.
From renowned Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki, Porco Rosso follows World War I flying ace Marco Pagott as he mysteriously turns from a man into a pig after all his comrades die in battle. Now known as Porco Rosso, the pilot continues fighting air pirates while, on the ground, flirting with a gorgeous club singer. After an attack by a brash American pilot, Porco meets confident Fio, who repairs his plane with her girl mechanics and sees him for who he really is. [94 min; anime, adventure; Japanese with English subtitles]
Preceding the feature will be the short film Daily Worker.
Daily Worker (Ting Su, United States and China, 2025): Digitizing union newspapers in the quiet of a darkroom, a filmmaker reflects on her relationship to labor, weaving together fragments of personal and historical memory. [10 min; documentary; Mandarin with English subtitles]
“Not only does this rank among Miyazaki’s finest achievements, it reflects his personal love of aviation, his political concerns and his fullest expression to date of a non-fantasy world resembling our own.” — Robert Koehler, Variety
"This homage to vintage Howard Hawks-style aerial thrills is as beautifully drawn and colored as anything he’s done. And it’s tremendous fun." — Mike Hale, The New York Times
"As usual with Miyazaki, the plot fits, starts and digresses at will, taking in the textures of pre-fascist Italy, details on the history of aviation and a lucid discussion on gender equality and physical beauty. Oh, and the kids will love it too." — David Jenkins, Time Out
