Control/Revolt
Film has long served as a tool to speak truth to power, marshaling the aims of multiple political, humanist, and cultural projects to both comment on, and spur, social and political change. In a contemporary moment where the world is seeing an increase in global regimes of oppressive control, this series examines film’s unique ability to inspire challenges to unchecked power, push back against domination, and perhaps foment resistance. From a scrappy group of punk rockers taking on neo-Nazis in the backwoods of Oregon (Green Room), to a fantastical allegory of guerilla resistance to fascism during the Spanish Civil War (Pan’s Labyrinth); from a reworking of the vampire legend as a metaphor for the long-lasting impacts of dictatorship (El Conde), to a clever yet subversive homage to the war film from our greatest living animator (Porco Rosso), Control/Revolt asks how film can serve as a cultural weapon for emancipation.
