After living 250 years in this world, Augusto Pinochet, who is not dead but an aged vampire, decides to die once and for all.
A dark comedy/horror that imagines a parallel universe inspired by the recent history of Chile, El Conde follows Augusto Pinochet—a symbol of world fascism—as a vampire who lives hidden in an isolated and ruined mansion where he feeds his appetite for evil to sustain his existence. After 250 years, though, no longer able to bear that the world remembers him as a thief, he stops drinking blood and abandons the privilege of eternal life. Despite the disappointing and opportunistic nature of his family, he finds new inspiration to continue living a life of vital and counterrevolutionary passion through an unexpected relationship. [110 min; comedy, fantasy; Spanish with English subtitles]
“The cruelty at the core of this vivacious vampiric farce is blended up with sharp yet silly gallows humor, ensuring the grim absurdities Larraín gracefully teases out increasingly take flight even as he continually drags us into gruesome and gory depths.” — Chase Hutchinson, Collider
"[A] wickedly funny, blood-soaked portrait of a decaying tyrant." — Carlos Aguilar, RogerEbert.com
"Are fascist dictators really vampires? That’s the shockingly funny premise behind director Pablo Lorrain’s look at Augusto Pinochet's reign of terror over Larrain’s native Chile. Flaws and all, the film speaks scarily to the undying nature of tyranny." — Peter Travers, ABC News
