In Michelangelo Antonioni’s first English-language feature, a swinging 1960s London photographer believes he has inadvertently photographed evidence of a murder, only to have the evidence mysteriously disappear. The film is a stylish study of the existential nature of reality interpreted through the visual arts, memory, paranoid intrigue, and disorientation. Upon release, response from critics was sharply divided, though Antonioni was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director and Best Screenplay. Fifty years later, the film is often considered a countercultural masterpiece. Jonathan Rosenbaum stated, “it is so ravishing to look at, and so pleasurable to follow, that you’re likely to excuse the metaphysical pretentions.”
