The 2022 Jon Vickers Film Scoring Award was presented to Daniel Whitworth in September 2020 as a commission to create an orchestral score for the 1919 film Phil-for-Short, starring Evelyn Greeley. This annual award is endowed by a gift from former IU trustee, the Honorable P.A. Mack Jr. This premiere presentation includes IU students in the roles of composer, conductor, musicians, audio technicians, projectionist, house managers, and ushers.
Presented in partnership with the Jacobs School of Music.
Curated by Maggie Hennefeld, Laura Horak and Jon Vickers.
Daniel Whitworth is a composer and saxophonist dedicated to expanding the relevance and accessibility of contemporary music. Frequently collaborating with filmmakers, dancers, and visual artists, he aims to connect and engage with audiences in unique ways. Whitworth has received a number of recent awards for his concert music, including winning the 2019 Lake George Composition Competition and winning first prize in the 2018 Frost International Composition Competition. An avid film hobbyist, he was initially drawn to film scoring as a way to combine his musical passions with his love for cinema. He is currently collaborating as a composer for Film Independent’s Los Angeles-based program Project Involve and will be scoring a short film from acclaimed director and actor Cris Gris. Whitworth is working towards a master’s degree from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music with a major in both composition and scoring for visual media. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University, where he majored in saxophone performance and composition.
