In this adaptation of Euripides’ Iphigenia at Aulis, 13-year-old Tatiana Papamoschou plays Iphigenia, the daughter of Agamemnon (Kostas Kazakos) and Clytemnestra (Irene Papas) who was ordered to be sacrificed to the goddess Artemis as recompense for an offense done to her by Agamemnon’s father. Agamemnon is preparing to command an army against Troy, but his assault is stymied by the gods until the sacrifice is carried out. Forced to comply to serve his men and his country, Agamemnon sends Iphigenia to her fate under the pretext of marriage. However, second thoughts send him on a race against time to undo his deceit, but only if fate will allow. Iphigenia was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and for the Palme d’Or at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival.
