Pop Music(als)!
Musicals are quite possibly the most polarizing genre of film—most people either love ’em or hate ’em. We think the real question though is: why do you hate fun? OK, yes, some musicals are chaotic, some are underwhelming, some should never have been musicals, some were born to be set to a tune. But the idea of a story, a concept, a truth set to music is almost as old as recorded human history. The Greek chorus? Musical! Also, some would even consider the founding principle of the collective voice of the people—and to go a stretch further, the seed that was planted to evolve into democracy itself. Indeed, there are countless musicals exploring political themes of representation and collective action or humanitarian tragedies like the AIDS crisis or raging fascism. That is not this series.
This series is about joy and all points leading to joyfulness, all set to a pop-music soundtrack. Is it frivolous in these modern times to be joyful? Absolutely not. Experiencing, celebrating, and sharing joy is an act of rebellion. Light drives out dark, remember? And thus, with this series, we hope you will take us up on the invitation to sit back, relax, mouth the words quietly to yourselves (please!), get up and dance if you’re so moved, but above all else: HAVE SOME FUN!
