Ukrainian Homelands
Ukrainian Cinema in the 1990s
The early nineties is a unique period in the history of Ukrainian cinema. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the disappearance of state censorship, young and desperate filmmakers enjoyed the ideological freedom to address new and forbidden topics, trying to revise the traumatic Soviet past and look into the future of an independent state. Unfortunately, along with the charms of the market economy, the default and collapse of film production and distribution followed—and for many young and ambitious filmmakers, the end of their careers. This partnership is supported through IU Cinema’s Creative Collaborations program.
Curated by Svitlana Melnyk and Stas Menzelevskyi of the Ukrainian Studies Organization with support from IU Cinema.
