Tanna was shot in and around the village of Yakel on Tanna Island, Vanuatu, and tells a story of star-crossed lovers who defy tradition. Universal themes resonate despite the supremely localized setting. The scenery is beguiling, from the rich green light of the forest to the mysterious wasteland of the volcano at the fiery heart of the narrative, and the camerawork makes for an almost tactile experience of surfaces such as skin, petals, and bark. The award-winning cinematography is matched by the graceful and guileless performances of the cast of untrained actors, who co-developed the plot around actual events that took place in their village. One underlying thread of the narrative is that resilience of traditional culture can be served by compromise and change from within. In the Nauvhal language with English subtitles.
